HARRY'S JOURNEY: A complete unit for ESL students!
HARRY'S JOURNEY: A complete unit for ESL students!
This unit has been prepared to help you explore the monomyth, introduced by Joseph Campbell. To work on these twelve steps of the Hero's Journey, I have chosen to focus on the first book of the Harry Potter series.
I use it with my "Troisième LLC" pupils, which aligns with the American 9th grade in France, serving as an enrichment for English. These students possess a strong command of the language, so I believe this unit could also be beneficial for lycée students: more advanced ESL learners.
I do not focus on grammar with my LLC students, so this unit does not include grammar lessons. However, it does offer a methodology for expanding vocabulary and learning new words and idioms. Additionally, you can utilize this unit to refresh your students' understanding of the following topics:
- The monomyth, introduced by Joseph Campbell and slightly adapted by Christopher Vogler
- The story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (including both the book and its film adaptation)
- The use of the superlative,
- Past tenses, such as the preterit and present perfect tense
- Connectors for complex sentences.

- 64 pages of documents.
- Links to audio files and videos.
